Why Do We Charge
For Hearing Tests?

We all love a bargain and if something is offered to us free of charge we may experience difficulty refusing such a generous offer. However, when a hearing test is offered to you free of charge we caution you to consider what you are really getting. Are you getting a quick hearing screening? Are you possibly getting drawn in to be sold a high priced hearing aid?

At McNeill Audiology, in business in Victoria for 15 years and in Sidney for 8 years, we have always charged for our hearing tests. We feel that an audiologist, trained at a masters or doctorate degree level to do specific testing, should be paid for their time and should have no pressure placed on them to make recommendations for hearing aids to stay in business. A clinic has to make money to stay in business and you can be sure that the cost of ‘free’ hearing tests are being loaded onto the cost of hearing aids that are purchased.

The audiologists at McNeill Audiology will conduct a full test of your hearing, offer recommendations for hearing aids if they are appropriate and then charge you for the audiological evaluation and send you on your way. If you decide to purchase hearing aids, the cost of the evaluation will be used as a credit for a hearing aid but in the event that the hearing aid is returned, the purchase cost is returned but the cost of the evaluation is retained. If you wish to pay for your hearing test and use the results to shop around for a hearing aid we encourage you. Adjusting to a hearing aid isn’t always easy and we support clients in their search for an audiologist they can work with easily and a clinic that will give them the service they need.

With the explosion of items offered on the internet you will find lots of sites that will offer free hearing tests. These online tests are great to use but only as a guide and should be followed up by a full audiological assessment by an audiologist.
